Following a contest for the leadership of the Labour Party, Andy Burnham became the new Prime Minister on 20 July. With him, a new Cabinet has been appointed. BPCA has written to the PM and key members of his Cabinet.
On 20 July, Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, became Prime Minister after winning the leadership of the Labour Party. The leadership contest was triggered in late June when Keir Starmer announced his intention to resign.
As the new Prime Minister, Burnham has appointed new Secretaries of State and Ministers to his government.
A new Prime Minister and Cabinet mean new decision-makers across chemical regulation, wildlife management, housing and public health. BPCA has acted quickly to put professional pest management on their agenda. Members can strengthen this work by telling us about the policy issues affecting their businesses.
What’s changed?
Angela Eagle has been appointed the new Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, replacing Emma Reynolds who was moved to the Treasury.
Angela Rayner has been appointed the new Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, replacing Steve Reed who had resigned just after Burnham took office.
Rosina Robson, Chief Executive of the BPCA, has written to Prime Minister Burnham to explain to him the value of our sector as well as our priorities in improving chemical regulation, public health and growth.
In her letter to Angela Eagle, Robson has highlighted all the opportunities BPCA and Defra must work together on; from tackling invasive species, to improving animal welfare by keeping glue traps out of the hands of amateurs.
Lastly, BPCA has also written to Angela Rayner at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, with BPCA being ready to support the rollout of Awaab’s Law.
The second phase of Awaab’s Law covering pest hazards is due to enter into force 30 November. The third phase is also expected next year, with further extensions to the private rented sector and temporary accommodation to follow.
